With nearly 400 entries to the B5 S4 surviving numbers database I thought I’d point out how the data can be sorted and parsed.

By use of the SEARCH box to the upper right of the table the data can be filtered to return a subset of the total entries.

For example, I would like to know how many 2001 model year Avants were submitted that were equipped with a 6MT transmission, Brilliant Black exterior, and are still roadworthy.  To find out I enter the following text into the search box:

As more search terms are entered into the search box the results are pared down further.

This returns the following results:

Of the nearly 400 entries there are 8 that match these criteria.

I could have omitted the exterior color, and the results would have been for all 2001 Avants with a 6MT that are roadworthy, regardless of exterior color.

This search result does not do much to tell me how many vehicles of this particular type are still on the road, but we can guess.  If there are 10-20 times as many vehicles on the road as participated in the survey thus far, that would put total numbers between 4000-8000 B5 S4’s still on the road.  Based on my search results, cars meeting my criteria would number 80 (8 x 10) to 160 (8 x 20).  This of course is a WAG, but interesting to ponder nonetheless.

Here’s a chart showing some information about the survey itself, the reply rate to the survey.

The histogram breaks out how many inputs were received during each four-hour time period for the first 80 hours that the survey was available to take part in.

Something I find impressive is that of the 330 inputs received, over half of them were made within the first 8 hours of the survey being active.

The first 24 hours of the B5 S4 survivors survey has had a large number of participants reporting on 260 Audi B5 S4’s.

Already an interesting result can be see when comparing the survey findings with the production numbers reported on the S4Wiki page for North American Audi B5 S4’s.

There is a definite shift in ownership to the later model years.  The first model year, 2000, is now 15% behind the share of total B5 S4’s from where it was when production of the B5 S4 stopped.

This is more significant when one considers that the 2000 model year was the only year that the B5 S4 was produced without the Electronic Stability Program, a feature that many enthusiasts are glad not to have.

Comparing the body styles, another trend is noticed.

While the percentages are likely within the margin of error, the trend is showing Avants comprising the larger percentage of current B5 S4’s that are on the road as compared to when production stopped in 2002.

This makes sense because the Avant models have commanded a higher sales price versus the Sedan models, which one would think should attract buyers that show greater concern for taking care of the vehicle they have purchased.
